Inheritance and preparation
Inheritance debt in Hiroshima: what to check before renouncing an inheritance
Key points
If a family member has died and you are worried about debts, organize when you learned of the death, when you learned that you may be an heir, the assets, the debts, and any collection notices. This guide is general preparation information; whether assistance can be provided must be checked separately for the individual situation.
This article is not a legal assessment of an individual case, does not guarantee any outcome, and does not mean every inheritance matter can be accepted. Before selling, withdrawing, using, or dividing assets, check how that may affect your options.

Record when you learned about the inheritance
Japanese court information explains that inheritance renunciation generally involves a three-month period from when you learned of the death and learned that you became an heir. Record the date, who informed you, and what was said.
If the deadline is close or may already have passed, do not decide on your own that nothing can be done. Keep letters, messages, emails, and documents showing when you learned the relevant facts.
Separate assets from debts
Make separate lists for bank deposits, real estate, insurance, and other assets, and for loans, guarantees, bills, or collection notices.
If there are not enough materials to decide, it may be necessary to check whether an extension can be requested from the family court. Record what you have searched for and what remains unclear.
Do not move or divide assets without checking
Selling, withdrawing, using, or dividing the deceased person's assets may affect inheritance renunciation. If something has already been done, record the date, time, and details openly.
When sending information, prepare the deceased person's last address, family relationship, documents about assets and debts, and information about other heirs as far as you know.
